チョムスキーやフィールドらアメリカ知識人が沖縄の米軍基地撤廃を要求、声明文発表

 言語学者のノーム・チョムスキー、歴史学者のピーター・カズニック(アメリカン大学)、日本研究のノーマ・フィールド(シカゴ大学)ら、80人以上のアメリカの知識人や平和活動家たちが、5月26日、アメリカ政府に対して、沖縄の米軍基地を閉鎖するよう要求する声明文を発表した。

 沖縄の女性がレイプされた上に殺害され、沖縄駐留の元米海兵隊員が逮捕された事件を受けて、声明をまとめた。

 さらに、アメリカ政府は、沖縄の人たちの希望を尊重し、基地を閉鎖し、島から撤退すべきだ、と主張。

 「私たちの多くは沖縄を訪れたことがある。平和を愛する地元の人たちが、美しい島から米軍基地が完全に撤退するよう要求していることに、私たちは賛同する」と述べている。
