「My name is」は使わないって本当?

Q. 「My name is」は死語だと思いますか?

William

I don’t. Not at all. Um it was the first thing that I went to when I was asked to introduce myself and I don’t see it leaving common usage at all. No.

Albert

It’s definitely not outdated. I think I use … I definitely use both, “My name is Albert,” and “I’m Albert.”

僕は「My name is Albert」と「I’m Albert」の両方を使うよ。

Monique

I don’t think that “My name is” is outdated. I think that it still has a place in certain conversations.

Marie

No I don’t think so. I think people nowadays still use it regularly.

Eddie

No. I still use it all the time.

Adam

I don’t think it’s an outdated expression but I do think it has its particular place.

Q. 「My name is」はどんな状況で使う?

William

So they’re extremely interchangeable in my view. But I think if you don’t know which one to use “My name is” is generally a little more professional. “My name is so and so.” If you are with friends you might say “Oh I’m William.” If you meet a new group of friends at a party or something but usually I think the more formal way to do it is “My name is.” If you have a job interview or if you are giving a presentation, I’d say so. Yeah but you can even say “My name is” at a party. It’s not like there’s a rigid rule set for how to use it. I don’t see it leaving American English.

「My name is 〜」のように。

Albert

It’s difficult to say which situations I would say which. I’m going to say that I would tend to say “My name is Albert” in a more formal situation, especially in front of a group. “I’m Albert” maybe with one person. Like “Hey, I’m Albert. What’s your name?”

例えば、「Hi, I’m Albert. What’s your name?」

Monique

I would use “My name is” in situations that are maybe a little more formal or like in the video you just took when you aren’t in front of the person at all. So maybe in workplace situations, when you are with a lot of people you don’t know at all, it’s a more formal situation. Whereas if I’m with a group of friends, I already know one person or I know a couple people and I’m being introduced to their friends and I’ll just say “Hi. I’m Monique.”

Marie

I think “My name (is)” you use more often when you’re introducing yourself. And then “I’m” is more like when someone is introducing you and you just kind of wanna (want to) confirm your name again and say it again one more time. So for example, you have a friend who’s introducing you to another person and they say “Hi. This is Marie.” And then you just wanna (want to) say like “Hi. I’m Marie” and then that’s when you use “I’m.”

This is Marie.(こんにちは。

Eddie

If I’m introducing myself cold, nobody has prepared a podium for me for example; I would say “Hello. My name is Eddie.” If I was at a conference and someone said, “Our next speaker is Eddie” then I might stand up and say, “I’m Eddie Louis and I’m really happy to be here today!” So I use it interchangeably all the time.

My name is Eddie.」 と紹介してくれたら、私は立って「I’m Eddie Louis and I’m really happy to be here today.(私はエディー・ルイスです。

Adam

(I would use “My name is”) When someone is asking you to introduce yourself to a large group of people. But if I were at a party and I was going to say “Hello” to say… somebody, I’d say “Hi. I’m Adam. Nice to meet you.”

I’m Adam. Nice to meet you.」
